Two Telangana educators to receive national Teachers' Day awards
Two educators from Telangana are set to receive national awards from President Droupadi Murmu in New Delhi on Saturday on the occasion of Teachers' Day. Separately, the Telangana government will felicitate 123 teachers and faculty members along with three education administrators at an event in Kodangal.
Bhavani Bompelly, who teaches at MPPS Girls Gandhari in Kamareddy district, is one of the 48 school teachers selected for the national honour. Prof. Kirti Chandra Sahu from the chemical engineering department of IIT Hyderabad has been selected among 21 teachers and faculty members from higher education institutions and polytechnics.
The national awards will be presented at Vigyan Bhawan in Delhi.
Bompelly has played a role in increasing enrolment at her school from 40 students in 2018 to around 130. She introduced pre-primary classes and adopted teaching methods that include play-based learning, digital tools, low-cost teaching aids and activity-based mathematics.
She also took part in an educational exposure programme in Finland recently. The Telangana government has approved additional classrooms, a library, a computer laboratory, toilets and an RO water plant for the school.
Prof. Sahu's research has focused on the shape and size of raindrops at different altitudes and their potential role in improving rainfall prediction.
At IIT Hyderabad, he established an experimental facility that recreates the atmospheric conditions encountered by falling raindrops. The facility can be used for applications related to weather forecasting and climate modelling. Sahu is also one of the founding faculty members of the institute.
The 48 school awardees include 26 men and 22 women representing 27 states, seven Union Territories and six Central government organisations. Short films showcasing their work will be screened as part of the national programme, which will also be broadcast live.
Of the 123 state awardees, 52 are from school education, 11 from intermediate education, three from technical education, 28 from universities and university-level institutions, and 29 from affiliated colleges.
The state government will also recognise A. Sridevasena, commissioner of technical and collegiate education; Mancherial collector Kumar Deepak; and SCERT director G. Ramesh for their contributions to educational administration.
