12.26 lakh Yaba tablets worth Rs 98 crore seized in Tripura
A joint operation by the Assam Rifles, Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) and Tripura Police has led to the seizure of 12.26 lakh Yaba tablets valued at around Rs 98 crore from two districts of the state, officials said on Wednesday.
Two persons, both from Assam, were arrested in connection with the seizures, according to an Assam Rifles statement.
Acting on specific intelligence inputs, the agencies carried out separate operations at Khowai in Khowai district and Panisagar in North Tripura on Tuesday night.
The operations resulted in the recovery of 12,26,000 Yaba tablets valued at Rs 98.08 crore, the statement said.
In the first operation, 7,26,000 tablets worth Rs 58.08 crore were seized from Khowai Chowmuhani. A resident of Itakhola in Assam's Sonitpur district was arrested.
In the second operation, Assam Rifles personnel and North Tripura Police recovered 5,00,000 Yaba tablets valued at Rs 40 crore from Panisagar. A resident of Nagrmari in Assam's Morigaon district was arrested and a truck was also seized.
Yaba tablets are methamphetamine-based stimulant drugs and are highly addictive, according to health authorities.
The Assam Rifles said the seizure of more than 12 lakh tablets in two separate operations underlined the continued efforts of security and enforcement agencies to disrupt inter-state narcotics trafficking networks operating through the Northeast.
The arrested persons, seized contraband and vehicle were handed over to the authorities for further investigation and legal proceedings, it added.
