Trainer aircraft veers off runway during training exercise in Maharashtra’s Baramati
A trainer aircraft operated by private aviation academy Carver Aviation veered off the runway during a training exercise at the Baramati airfield in Maharashtra’s Pune district on Sunday, police said. No injuries were reported.
The incident took place at around 12.30 pm and involved an aircraft carrying a pilot and a cadet, according to police officials.
Officials said the aircraft was conducting a circuit-and-landing emergency training exercise when it was unable to stop within the designated portion of the runway.
The aircraft travelled beyond the runway threshold before moving onto the grassy area beside the paved surface.
As part of the exercise, the aircraft first positioned itself at the threshold of Runway 29 and carried out a rejected take-off. It was subsequently moved to the threshold of Runway 11, where another rejected take-off was performed.
During the exercise, the aircraft again failed to come to a complete stop on the runway and continued beyond the runway end. It then moved off the extended paved surface towards the right side beyond the Runway 29 threshold.
Police said the aircraft travelled approximately 20 feet beyond the end of the runway before entering the grass. There were no reported casualties or injuries.
The incident comes months after another aviation accident at the same airstrip. On January 28, a private charter aircraft carrying then Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar and four other people crashed near the Baramati airfield. All five people on board were killed.
In another incident on May 13, a trainer aircraft operated by a different private aviation company made a crash landing near the Baramati airstrip after reportedly developing a technical problem. No casualties were reported in that incident either.
