Telangana CM seeks Centre's intervention in Tummidihetti barrage dispute with Maharashtra

Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy on Wednesday, Aug 5th, urged the Centre to facilitate talks with Maharashtra to resolve the long-pending dispute over the proposed height of the Tummidihetti barrage on the Pranahita river.

During a meeting with Union Jal Shakti Minister C R Patil, Reddy sought the Centre's intervention to persuade Maharashtra to agree to raising the barrage height from the earlier proposed 148 metres to 150 metres, according to a state government statement.

The barrage is part of the Pranahita-Chevella irrigation project and is proposed at Tummidihetti village in Kouthala mandal of the erstwhile Adilabad district.

Reddy said a 150-metre barrage would enable Telangana to utilise its allocated Godavari waters through gravity flow, avoiding the high cost of lift irrigation systems.

He also told the Union minister that increasing the barrage height would keep the submergence area below 1,000 hectares, the statement said.

Irrigation Minister N Uttam Kumar Reddy and several Members of Parliament from Telangana accompanied the chief minister during the meeting.
