Rahul defaming Indian institutions, culture, civilisation to please 'foreign masters': BJP's Chugh
BJP MP Tarun Chugh on Sunday accused Congress leader Rahul Gandhi of spreading "lies and confusion" about the Election Commission and alleged that he was defaming Indian institutions, culture and civilisation to "please his foreign masters".
Speaking to PTI Videos on the sidelines of a programme in Raipur, Chugh said elections under previous Congress governments had witnessed booth capturing, violence and other irregularities, while polls under the BJP-led government were being conducted by an impartial Election Commission.
"The Election Commission takes every decision by majority, and this was proved in yesterday's press conference. The press conference was a strong rebuttal to the lies of Rahul Gandhi and other UPA leaders. The conspiracy being hatched by Rahul Gandhi through lies, confusion and deception has failed," Chugh said.
He alleged that Gandhi had taken a "supari" from US billionaire George Soros to defame the Election Commission and malign Indian institutions, culture and civilisation.
"To please his foreign masters, Rahul Gandhi has been continuously engaging in a conspiracy, spreading lies and creating confusion," Chugh alleged.
Chugh also questioned Gandhi over the functioning of the Election Commission during previous Congress-led governments, claiming that the poll panel then had a different structure.
"Rahul ji, the country wants to know that you were in power for five decades, and during that period there was only one-member Election Commission. That member would later contest elections on a Congress ticket or be appointed as a governor. Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership, we made a multi-member Election Commission," he said.
Chugh alleged that elections during Congress rule were rigged and marked by booth looting, killings and violence. He said the Election Commission was now acting independently and that names of alleged infiltrators and deceased persons had been removed from electoral rolls.
"What connection do you have with these infiltrators or deceased voters? Rahul Gandhi has been creating confusion, spreading lies and misleading people," he said.
He also questioned the voter registration of Congress leader Sonia Gandhi before she became an Indian citizen and asked which Election Commission had allegedly extended her such a favour.
"Those whose own records are tainted are levelling allegations against others," Chugh said.
"Rahul Gandhi's only objective is to defame the country. He is a habitual offender in this regard," he alleged.
Chugh said the Election Commission was an independent constitutional authority and claimed that people from across the world came to study India's electoral process.
