Surat influencer Simran Patel arrested over objectionable reel with Gandhi image on Rs 500 note

A 47-year-old woman with around one million Instagram followers has been arrested by the Surat Cyber Crime Branch for allegedly posting an objectionable reel that used Mahatma Gandhi's image on a Rs 500 currency note, an official said on Monday.
A Cyber Crime Branch press note identified the accused as Simran Patel, a homemaker from the Adajan area of the city. She was arrested under Section 67 of the Information Technology Act.
According to the press note, Patel uploaded the reel on October 1. It allegedly showed the image of Gandhi on the note in a vulgar manner, along with insulting remarks and gestures with sexual references. A citizen who saw the video after it was shared on Instagram approached the police, the note said.
Police urged people not to spread rumours or unverified content on social media, and asked them to report fake or objectionable reels and posts to the authorities.
The note also cautioned users against making or sharing obscene, objectionable or insulting content involving national figures or religious and social symbols. Such acts are illegal and can invite legal action, it said.
