Three new judges appointed to Supreme Court, working strength rises to 37

Three judges, including the chief justices of the Gujarat, Delhi and Telangana high courts, were appointed to the Supreme Court on Monday, taking the top court's working strength to 37, one short of its sanctioned strength of 38.
Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal announced the appointments in a social media post.
The three judges are Justice Sunita Agarwal, Chief Justice of the Gujarat High Court; Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya, Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court; and Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh, Chief Justice of the Telangana High Court.
The Supreme Court Collegium had recommended their names on September 28.
The apex court currently has 34 judges. Once the three appointees take oath, its effective working strength will rise to 37.
The sanctioned strength of the Supreme Court was recently increased from 34 to 38 judges, including the Chief Justice of India, following the Supreme Court Amendment Act, 2026.
