Woman rescued after stepping onto Kolkata Metro tracks to switch platforms

A woman had a narrow escape after stepping onto the tracks at Kolkata Metro's Bansdroni (Masterda Surya Sen) station while attempting to switch platforms, briefly disrupting services on the Blue Line.

According to officials, the woman mistakenly reached the Up-line platform instead of the Down line for a train towards New Garia. Instead of using the designated subway or foot overbridge, she climbed down onto the tracks to cross over.

The situation became critical as a metro train had already arrived on the Down line while another train was preparing to depart from the Up line. Alert passengers raised an alarm, prompting the woman to stop near the 400-volt electrified third rail, avoiding what could have been a fatal accident.

Metro authorities immediately switched off power to the third rail and suspended train services on the affected stretch for around five to ten minutes. Personnel from the Government Railway Police (GRP) and metro staff safely rescued the woman and escorted her to the correct platform before services resumed.

The woman later said she had mistakenly gone to the wrong platform and attempted to cross the tracks after realising the error. The incident has raised fresh concerns about passenger safety and station security, with authorities expected to review safety measures and once again urging commuters never to enter metro tracks.
