Udhayanidhi Stalin to be presented before Madras HC

DMK leader Udhayanidhi Stalin to be presented before the Madras High Court on Tuesday, August 4. He is expected to apply for anticipatory bail.

The Advocate General for Tamil Nadu Vijay Narayan will represent the Thanjavur district police and N.R. Elango will be representing Udhayanidhi Stalin. The hearing is expected to take place after the court reconvenes post lunch.

Earlier the police officials from Thanjavur told media that they held talks with Udhayanidhi Stalin's family and senior party leader Ma Subramanian before arresting the leader of opposition on Tuesday, August 4, reported PTI, citing sources.

Even as a huge number of party workers gathered in front of Udhayanidhi's residence and raised slogans to condemn the police for acting against their leader, senior police officials held talks.

They spoke to Udhayanidhi's wife Kiruthika Stalin and Subramanian and explained the reasons for the arrest, and the DMK top leader's family sought some time for him to appear before officials for executing the arrest.

DMK workers argued with police officials about the necessity and the reason for the arrest, and chaotic scenes emerged outside the residence and barricades were pushed away by cadres.

After arriving at Udhayanidhi Stalin's Neelankarai home for making the arrest, police waited for about an hour, sources said.

K N Nehru, P K Sekar Babu were among the former ministers present and raised slogans when police took Udhayanidhi away to Thanjavur in a van.

DMK cadres staged a protest and also resorted to road roko across the state condemning the arrest. Cadres burnt effigies in a few places to vent out their anger against Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay for arresting their leader.

Promoting enmity, provocation with intent to cause riot, insult to woman's modesty, and criminal intimidation were among the nine sections invoked against Udhayanidhi.

Provisions under the TN Prohibition of Harassment of Women Act have also been invoked, sources added.
