Two killed in Manipur, CM urges unity, peace

Asserting that his Government’s priority is the restoration of peace, Manipur Chief Minister Y Khemchand Singh on Sunday called for unity and mutual understanding among all 36 communities in the State. His comment came on a day when at least four people, including two women, were killed when suspected militants attacked their villages in Tamenglong and Noney districts.

“The present Government was formed during a period of severe crisis, and restoring peace and normalcy in the state remains one of its foremost responsibilities,” the CM said. The task of bringing peace amid the prevailing situation was like “threading a needle through a torn cloth”, requiring patience, careful efforts and gradual progress, he said. “We are all Manipuris. We have 36 communities, and we should never be apart,” the chief minister said, stressing the need for unity and mutual understanding among all communities of the State.

Singh made the remarks at the closing ceremony of the 3rd Singjamei Constituency Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) Trophy State Level Open Chess Tournament 2026.
The CM also stated that he had held discussions and negotiations with various civil society organisations and stakeholders to facilitate the reopening of the route from Imphal to Guwahati. 
It was through the spirit of understanding and sustained dialogue that progress had been made towards restoring movement along the route from Imphal to Guwahati.

    The ethnic conflict that erupted in May 2023 between the valley-based Meitei and the hill-based Kuki communities in Manipur has claimed at least 306 lives, with 49 individuals remaining missing and thousands left homeless.
