Twisha Sharma Case: Cops ask family to collect decomposed body after delay at Mortuary

Police in Bhopal have urged the family of Twisha Sharma to take custody of her body from the AIIMS Bhopal mortuary, warning that further delay could lead to decomposition.

Twisha Sharma was found dead at her in-laws’ home on May 12, just months after her marriage. Her body has remained at the mortuary since May 13, as her family has refused to accept it pending a second post-mortem examination.

In a letter to the family, police said the body had already been preserved for several days and could deteriorate further, noting that ideal long-term preservation facilities were not available at the hospital. They added that the first post-mortem had already been completed and there was no objection to a re-examination if required.

The family, however, continues to insist on an independent and more detailed medical review before performing the last rites, alleging inconsistencies in the investigation and claiming that Twisha was subjected to harassment and abuse.

Authorities have maintained that procedural delays in custody of the body are now affecting preservation, while the investigation into the circumstances of her death remains underway.
