Turkish Airlines plane carrying 278 passengers catches fire during landing at Kathmandu Airport

A Turkish Airlines aircraft carrying 278 passengers and 11 crew members caught fire during landing at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu on May 11, 2026, triggering an emergency evacuation but fortunately resulting in no injuries.

The flight, identified as TK 726 operated by Turkish Airlines, was arriving from Istanbul when the incident occurred at around 6:45 am local time.

According to airport authorities, flames and smoke were seen emerging from the aircraft’s right landing gear as it touched down on the runway. Emergency protocols were immediately activated, and all passengers and crew members were safely evacuated.

The aircraft was later grounded for detailed inspection, repair, and maintenance. Aviation authorities have ordered a technical investigation to determine the exact cause of the fire.

Officials said the presence of United Nations personnel was also noted among the passengers onboard the flight. Despite the seriousness of the incident, airport operations resumed after a temporary suspension.

Tribhuvan International Airport temporarily halted both domestic and international flight operations following the incident as a precautionary measure. Normal operations were restored after safety checks were completed.

Preliminary reports suggest the fire may have originated from the right main landing gear assembly, though the exact cause is yet to be confirmed.

A full inquiry has been initiated by aviation authorities in coordination with airline engineers and airport safety teams.
