Trump pushes Iran peace deal as Strait of Hormuz reopening nears amid continued Israel-Lebanon tensions

Efforts to end the ongoing West Asia conflict gathered momentum on Saturday, with US President Donald Trump expressing confidence that a peace agreement between the United States and Iran could be finalized within the next 24 hours. The proposed deal is expected to focus on reopening the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz and laying the groundwork for broader negotiations.
According to reports, the draft agreement includes measures to restore maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, ease restrictions on Iranian oil exports, and initiate talks on Iran’s nuclear programme. However, significant differences remain over issues such as uranium enrichment, sanctions relief, and regional security arrangements.
Despite diplomatic progress, tensions continue on the ground. US forces reportedly intercepted Iranian attack drones near the Strait of Hormuz, while clashes linked to the broader regional conflict have persisted in Lebanon. Israel has maintained that any agreement with Iran would not automatically halt its military operations against Hezbollah.
Iran has also sought assurances regarding a ceasefire in Lebanon as part of the wider settlement framework. However, Israeli officials have signalled that they may continue independent security operations, highlighting the challenges facing a comprehensive regional peace arrangement.
The conflict, which has disrupted shipping routes and raised concerns over global energy supplies, has kept international markets on edge. Any successful agreement to reopen the Strait of Hormuz is expected to ease pressure on oil markets and improve regional stability.
