Tripura DGP Anurag Dhankar cremated with full State honours in UP home town

Tripura Director General of Police (DGP) Anurag Dhankar was on Wednesday cremated with full State honours in his ancestral town of Baraut here in Uttar Pradesh, officials said.

His son, Abhishek, lit the funeral pyre at the cremation ground near Bawli Chungi on the Delhi-Saharanpur highway. A guard of honour was accorded to the senior IPS officer before the last rites.

Dhankar (60) was found hanging in his washroom at the Tripura police headquarters on Monday. Officials have said it appears to be a case of suicide. He was elevated to the post of DGP from Additional DGP in May 2025 and was due to retire in 11 months.

On Wednesday, a funeral procession of around 1 km was taken out. Nearly 500 people, including police officers, public representatives and locals, participated in it.

Dhankar, a native of Biharipur village in Baghpat district, was brought to his residence on Gandhi Road in Baraut shortly after midnight on Tuesday.

From Wednesday morning, a large number of people gathered to pay their last respects. Senior police and administrative officials, elected representatives and local residents offered floral tributes. Uttar Pradesh Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Social Welfare Asim Arun, a former IPS officer, attended the funeral and expressed condolences to the bereaved family.

Arun and Dhankar belonged to the 1994 batch of the Indian Police Service and had training together at the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration in Mussoorie and the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy in Hyderabad. They also served together in the United Nations mission in Kosovo. Recalling his batchmate and close friend, Arun shared memories of their years together and prayed for peace to the departed soul. Dhankar led the CBI probe into the Rs 13,000 crore PNB fraud case involving Nirav Modi and the reinvestigation of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots case. He is survived by his wife and son, who lives in Canada.
