Three arrested for forcing entry into Mumbai's BKC mall with gun; police say no link to PM Modi's event

Mumbai: Three men were arrested for allegedly forcing their way into a high-end shopping mall in Mumbai's Bandra-Kurla Complex while one of them carried a firearm, police said on Tuesday, clarifying that the incident had no link to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's scheduled event in the area on Tuesday evening.

Police earlier said a 24-year-old man claiming to be a PMO official and his armed 'bodyguard' had been detained at the Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre in BKC hours before the PM's event. Police later clarified that the incident occurred at Jio World Plaza in BKC on Monday and had no connection with the prime minister's visit.

When security staff stopped the three suspects at the mall, the men allegedly produced a suspicious-looking government identity card, argued with the guards and forced their way inside, a senior official said.

Following a complaint by mall officials, the BKC Police registered an FIR under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita sections for impersonating a public servant and unlawful entry while armed with a deadly weapon. Police traced and arrested all three men.

"The incident took place on Monday at the shopping plaza. It was an isolated breach, and we have confirmed that the weapon involved is licensed. This matter is entirely unrelated to the Hon'ble Prime Minister's visit to Mumbai today," the senior police officer said.

The Mumbai Crime Branch is conducting a parallel investigation to verify the authenticity of the identity card and ascertain the accused's exact motive, officials added.

Prime Minister Modi is scheduled to attend the Global Fintech Fest (GFF) 2026 in Mumbai, where he will inaugurate the seventh edition of the annual fintech conference.
