Telangana Assembly adjourned amid BJP, BRS protests on session's first day

The monsoon session of the Telangana Assembly began on a stormy note on Monday, with the House being adjourned for 15 minutes shortly after proceedings began following protests by opposition BJP members.

BJP MLAs raised slogans and demanded an immediate discussion on the inclusion of private lands in the prohibitory list under Section 22A of the Registration Act, which restricts registration and other transactions involving such properties.

The BJP members continued their protest despite Speaker Gaddam Prasad Kumar's appeal to cooperate with the proceedings.

Legislative Affairs Minister D Sridhar Babu said the government was ready to discuss the issue, but the assurance failed to end the disruption.

Meanwhile, a protest by BRS members outside the Assembly premises led to a confrontation with police. The BRS leaders and workers, who were wearing black T-shirts, were stopped by police.

The T-shirts carried slogans criticising the Congress government, including "Congress failed to deliver on its promises".

BRS MLA Sunita Laxmareddy broke down during the incident and said she suffered a minor injury while police were stopping the protesters.

BRS MLA Harish Rao and some other party leaders removed their shirts in protest against the police action. They were subsequently taken away from the spot in a police van.

According to a statement issued by the BRS, Working President K T Rama Rao and some other party leaders also suffered minor injuries during the scuffle.  (with inputs from PTI)
