Telangana: 4 booked after woman dies in 'illegal' abortion

A 35-year-old pregnant woman died in Jangaon district of Telangana, allegedly following an illegal abortion after undergoing a prenatal sex determination test that revealed the foetus was female, the police said on Tuesday, July 28.

The abortion was carried out at the residence of an auxiliary nurse midwife (ANM) in Jangaon on July 21, and the woman died in a state-run hospital on July 25 after severe bleeding following the procedure.

Based on a complaint filed by the deceased woman's husband a case was filed against all four people, the woman's mother, a registered medical practitioner (RMP), the ANM, and the owner of a scanning centre, a police official said as reported by PTI.

The couple were residing in the Jangaon district of Telangana and already had two daughters. After the woman became pregnant again, she went to Devuruppala mandal and her mother approached the RMP, who eventually referred them to the scanning centre to undergo a prenatal sex determination test to determine the gender of the baby.

After the scan revealed that the foetus was female, the woman's mother allegedly decided for an abortion, and the procedure was performed at the ANM's house, the official said.

The accused are absconding, and further investigation is on, police added.
