Telangana to get approval for 2 lakh PM Awas houses, says Shivraj Chouhan

Union Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Thursday criticised the previous BRS government in Telangana over its alleged failure to implement the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, saying the Centre would hand over approval for the construction of 2 lakh houses to the state government on September 18.

Chouhan said the 2 lakh houses would constitute the first tranche under the scheme and that additional houses would be sanctioned for Telangana. The Centre’s latest allocation takes the state’s total PMAY-G housing availability to 2 lakh, according to recent statements from the Union government.

Speaking during an interaction with farmers in a village near Hyderabad alongside Union Coal Minister G Kishan Reddy, Chouhan alleged that the previous K Chandrasekhar Rao-led government had declined to implement the central housing scheme despite the Centre being ready to sanction houses for poor families.

“The previous government did not implement the scheme. But the present government is ready to implement PM Awas Yojana,” Chouhan said.

He also said the Centre and the Telangana government would work to implement the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana, alleging that the previous BRS government had not implemented the crop insurance scheme in the state.

Chouhan said a regional conference of agriculture ministers from southern states would be held in Hyderabad on Friday, with discussions expected to focus on modernising agriculture and increasing farmers’ incomes.

He further assured that the Centre would work towards implementing the Lakhpati Didi initiative in Telangana for women associated with Self-Help Groups. Under the initiative, a Lakhpati Didi is defined as a Self-Help Group member whose annual household income exceeds Rs 1 lakh.

The Telangana government had earlier sought 11.56 lakh houses under PMAY-G after an Awaas+ survey identified 11,56,915 eligible rural families in the state, according to the state government.
