Tamil Nadu Governor declines Vijay’s bid to form government, cites lack of majority support

Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar has declined C. Joseph Vijay’s claim to form the government, stating that the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam failed to establish the required majority in the Assembly.

The clarification from Lok Bhavan came shortly after Vijay met the Governor for the second time within 24 hours in an effort to stake claim to power following TVK’s strong performance in the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections.

In an official statement, Raj Bhavan said the Governor had explained to Vijay that the “requisite majority support” needed to form the government had not been established in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly.

TVK had emerged as the single largest party in the elections with 108 seats in the 234-member Assembly. However, the party still remains short of the majority mark of 118 despite receiving support from the Congress, which holds five seats.

This was Vijay’s second attempt to convince the Governor after his earlier bid was also put on hold over concerns regarding majority numbers.

The political uncertainty in Tamil Nadu has intensified after reports emerged of possible discussions between rival Dravidian parties, including the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, aimed at preventing TVK from forming the government.

For now, Raj Bhavan’s stand remains unchanged, with Vijay expected to continue efforts to secure additional support from legislators and smaller parties.
