Tamil Nadu Assembly passes resolution against Karnataka’s Mekedatu project

The Tamil Nadu Assembly on Friday passed a resolution opposing Karnataka’s Mekedatu dam project, intensifying the long-standing inter-state dispute over Cauvery river water sharing. The resolution urges the Union government not to grant any approvals, including technical and environmental clearances, for the proposed project.

The motion, moved in the House, received support from allied parties including the Congress, marking a rare political consensus within the ruling alliance. The decision reflects Tamil Nadu’s continued stance that the Mekedatu project could adversely affect its water allocation and irrigation needs, particularly in delta regions dependent on Cauvery flows.

The Mekedatu issue has remained a sensitive flashpoint between the two states, with Tamil Nadu consistently opposing Karnataka’s plans for the reservoir. The project has triggered repeated legal and political exchanges, with both states asserting their respective rights over river water distribution.

While Karnataka has maintained that the dam is essential for drinking water supply and regulation of Cauvery flows, Tamil Nadu argues that it violates existing tribunal awards and could reduce downstream water availability.

The latest resolution is expected to further escalate the dispute, potentially drawing the attention of central water authorities and the Supreme Court if Karnataka proceeds with its proposal.
