Sangita Srivastava reappointed Allahabad University VC for second term

Sangita Srivastava has been reappointed Vice Chancellor of Allahabad University for a second five-year term, making her the first person in the varsity's history to serve two terms in the post, according to officials.

President Droupadi Murmu, in her capacity as Visitor of the University of Allahabad, approved Srivastava's appointment for another five years or until she attains the age of 70, whichever is earlier, a senior Ministry of Education official said.

The appointment letter reached the university on September 23, which also marked its foundation day.

Srivastava assumed charge as Vice Chancellor on November 30, 2020, becoming the first woman to head the university.

"I am committed to serving the institution and society. I will continue working to make the university a centre of excellence in all areas of education," Srivastava said.

Her first five-year term was scheduled to end on November 29, 2025. The Ministry of Education had subsequently extended her tenure until the appointment of her successor was completed.

Allahabad University Public Relations Officer Jaya Kapoor said an order appointing Srivastava for a second term was issued on Tuesday on behalf of the President. The ministry also informed the university about the decision.

The university said her reappointment was welcomed by teachers, employees and students.

During Srivastava's first term, the university received an A+ grade from the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) and implemented a four-year undergraduate programme under the National Education Policy.

According to the university, around 400 teachers were appointed and more than 280 promoted during her tenure, while 636 non-teaching employees were recruited.

A Roll of Honour board carrying the names of 256 distinguished alumni was installed at the Vijayanagaram campus. A day-care centre was also established in the Faculty of Science, the university said.
