Alleged habitual drug peddler detained under PIT-NDPS Act in J-K's Samba

Police have detained an alleged habitual drug peddler under the Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (PIT-NDPS) Act in Jammu and Kashmir's Samba district, officials said on Tuesday.

The accused, identified as Sahil Kumar, a resident of Budwani tehsil, was detained over his alleged continued involvement in drug trafficking, police said.

According to officials, Kumar is facing multiple cases registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act at different police stations in Samba district in connection with alleged drug peddling.

Police said he was found to be a habitual drug offender and his activities posed a serious threat to public health and welfare.

In view of his repeated alleged involvement in illicit drug trafficking, police prepared a dossier along with supporting documents and submitted it to the Jammu divisional commissioner.

The divisional commissioner subsequently issued a formal detention order under the PIT-NDPS Act, following which Kumar was detained and lodged in jail, officials said.

Police said stringent action would continue against drug peddlers and smugglers as part of efforts to curb the spread of narcotics in the district.
