Former Congress MP Sajjan Kumar dies while serving life term in 1984 riots case

Former Congress MP Sajjan Kumar, who was serving life sentences in cases related to the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, died at Safdarjung Hospital on Thursday, hospital sources said.
The hospital has not yet disclosed the cause of his death.
Kumar was sentenced to life imprisonment by the Delhi High Court on December 17, 2018, in a case concerning the killing of five Sikhs and the burning of a gurdwara during the 1984 riots.
He was lodged in Tihar Jail following his conviction.
In February 2025, a Delhi court sentenced Kumar to another life term in a separate case involving the killing of two Sikh men during the riots.
Kumar had represented the Outer Delhi constituency in the Lok Sabha three times and was a prominent Congress leader.
He resigned from the party following his conviction in 2018.
