From a railway project implementation agency to a diversified infrastructure enterprise

In little more than two decades, Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL), created to accelerate railway development, has evolved into a diversified infrastructure enterprise spanning railways, metros, bridges, tunnels, digital infrastructure, power, renewable energy and rolling stock.
EMERGING FROM A NATIONAL VISION
RVNL emerged from the National Rail Vikas Yojana announced by Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee on 15 August 2002 to strengthen railway infrastructure and accelerate capacity creation. Incorporated on 24 January 2003 under the Ministry of Railways, it received its Certificate of Commencement of Business on 18 February 2003 and began operations with its Board in 2005.
Its journey has included Category-I Mini Ratna status in 2013, listing on the BSE and NSE in 2019, and Navratna status in 2023.
FROM RAIL INFRA TO ALL INFRA
RVNL’s transformation is increasingly defined by its move “from Rail Infra to All Infra.” Building on strengths in engineering, project management, systems integration, tunnelling, bridges and electrification, it has expanded into metros, roads and highways, ports, power and transmission, telecommunications, renewable energy and rolling-stock manufacturing.
In FY2025-26, its order book stood at approximately Rs 99,262 crore, reflecting its wider infrastructure footprint.
ENGINEERING LANDMARKS
The New Pamban Bridge in Tamil Nadu represents RVNL’s bridge-engineering capability, combining rail connectivity with a navigational opening for marine traffic.
The 125-km Rishikesh-Karnaprayag Rail Link is another major undertaking, involving extensive tunnelling through challenging Himalayan terrain.
RVNL has also contributed to metro projects including Indore’s Yellow Line and Kolkata’s Majerhat Metro Station, built over an existing railway yard and drainage canal. Its project portfolio includes the 8.86-km Vallarpadam-Idappally rail link in Kerala.
DIGITAL CONNECTIVITY AND SUSTAINABLE INFRASTRUCTURE
RVNL’s participation in BharatNet’s Middle-Mile Network extends its role into rural digital connectivity. Sustainability is also becoming integral to execution through renewable energy, energy-efficient designs, recycled materials, responsible resource use and measures aimed at strengthening asset resilience.
HYDRO-IRRIGATION: A NEW FRONTIER
RVNL is expanding into hydropower and irrigation by leveraging its capabilities in large civil works, tunnelling and water conveyance.
Its assignments include the Rammam-III Hydroelectric Project for NTPC in the Teesta Basin, involving major civil and hydro-mechanical works.
In Rajasthan, RVNL is executing the Upper High-Level Canal component of the Mahi Bajaj Sagar Project through an RVNL-SCC Infrastructure joint venture. The project includes a canal and piped distribution network designed to provide irrigation to approximately 41,903 hectares.
AN EMERGING GLOBAL INFRASTRUCTURE PLAYER
RVNL’s ambitions increasingly extend beyond India. Its international activities span the Middle East, Central Asia and Africa, taking Indian engineering and project-execution capability to growing infrastructure markets.
STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIPS AND TECHNOLOGY
Special Purpose Vehicles, Joint Ventures and Public-Private Partnerships have supported RVNL’s expansion by combining capital, expertise and execution capability. Its partnerships now cover logistics, roads and highways, overseas ventures and rolling-stock manufacturing and maintenance, including the Vande Bharat sleeper train programme.
Technology is also becoming central to project delivery. RVNL is deploying digital project-management systems, Building Information Modelling, GIS, drone surveys, data analytics and real-time monitoring. Technology also supports smarter monitoring and maintenance across RVNL’s expanding infrastructure portfolio. AI, IoT, automation and Industry 4.0 offer further scope to improve planning, safety and productivity.

SCALE, FINANCIAL STRENGTH AND FY2025-26
In FY2025-26, RVNL recorded consolidated revenue from operations of Rs 20,412.12 crore and consolidated Profit After Tax of Rs 870.66 crore. Its order book of approximately Rs 99,262 crore provides visibility for future execution across railways, signalling, metros, ports, roads and highways, power and hydro-irrigation.
BUILDING COMMUNITIES BEYOND INFRASTRUCTURE
Infrastructure ultimately improves lives by strengthening access, connectivity and livelihoods. RVNL complements its project activity through CSR initiatives in healthcare, education, sanitation, skill development, sports promotion and community welfare.
