PM Modi remembers Kerala’s social reform icons

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday, August 28, paid tribute to two of Kerala’s prominent social reformers, Mahatma Ayyankali and Sree Narayana Guru, on their respective birth anniversaries, remembering both as influential figures in the fight for social justice and empowerment.

Marking the 163rd birth anniversary of Ayyankali and the 170th birth anniversary of Sree Narayana Guru, Modi highlighted their contributions to social reform and the upliftment of marginalised communities.

In a post on X, Modi described Ayyankali as a pioneer of social justice and praised his efforts to expand access to education for marginalised communities, improve the conditions of agricultural workers and support the poor. He said Ayyankali’s life continues to inspire those working towards social empowerment.

Paying tribute to Sree Narayana Guru, Modi described him as a prominent social reformer, spiritual leader and thinker who dedicated his life to building a society based on dignity and compassion. He also highlighted Guru’s emphasis on education and learning, saying his ideas had inspired countless people.

Several programmes were held across Kerala to commemorate the birth anniversaries of the two reformers.

Ayyankali (1863-1941) played a key role in advancing the rights of oppressed communities in the erstwhile princely state of Travancore and remains an important figure in Kerala’s social reform history.

Sree Narayana Guru (1856-1928), a philosopher, spiritual leader and social reformer, also played a major role in challenging social inequalities and promoting education and social progress in Kerala.
