PM Modi, Trump push for early India-US Trade Deal during G7 Summit meeting

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump have directed officials from both countries to expedite negotiations on a balanced, mutually beneficial and commercially meaningful trade agreement. The decision came during their bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in France.

According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), the two leaders reviewed progress in talks on an interim bilateral trade pact and reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening the India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership. US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer is scheduled to visit India next week to advance discussions on the proposed agreement.

The leaders also assessed progress under the India-US COMPACT initiative, which focuses on cooperation in defence, strategic technologies, energy and trade. Both sides welcomed developments across these sectors and expressed optimism about expanding bilateral collaboration.

During the meeting, Prime Minister Modi appreciated President Trump's efforts to promote peace and stability in West Asia. He also stressed the importance of maintaining freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz and ensuring the safety of seafarers amid regional tensions.

The talks come as India and the US seek to rebuild ties following trade disputes, tariff issues and differences over remarks related to the India-Pakistan conflict. Recent diplomatic engagements and ongoing trade negotiations indicate a renewed push to strengthen economic and strategic relations between the two countries.
