US deported 4,840 Indians since 2025

The US has deported 4,840 Indian nationals since 2025, including 1,273 between January and July 2026, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said on Friday. Addressing the weekly media briefing, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said 3,567 Indians were deported in 2025, while 1,273 have been sent back between January 1 and July this year. Jaiswal said India works with several Governments on deportation-related matters and carries out due diligence to verify the nationality of individuals before accepting their return. “As and when such issues are referred to us, we conduct due diligence on our side to confirm the nationality of the person being referred for deportation,” he said. “Once we are fully satisfied that the person concerned is of Indian nationality, only then we facilitate their return to India.”

The figures come amid the Trump administration’s intensified crackdown on illegal immigration, under which deportations of undocumented migrants have increased.

SC Pauses NSE RTI Ruling

The Supreme Court on Friday stayed a Central Information Commission (CIC) order holding the National Stock Exchange of India (NSEI) to be a “public authority” under the Right to Information (RTI) Act. A bench of Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta issued notice to the CIC and other respondents, seeking their replies within four weeks while agreeing to hear NSEI’s challenge. The exchange has contested a July 1 Delhi High Court judgment that upheld a single judge’s 2010 ruling declaring NSEI a “public authority” under Section 2(h) of the RTI Act. The High Court had endorsed the CIC’s 2007 decision, observing that bodies owned, controlled or substantially financed by the Government fall within the RTI framework. The division bench had agreed with the single judge’s finding that NSEI is controlled by the appropriate Government, making it subject to the transparency law.

The Supreme Court’s interim stay pauses the operation of the CIC order pending further hearing.
