Over 80 houses demolished in Indore road-widening drive, residents allege no compensation or rehabilitation

More than 80 houses and shops were demolished as part of a road-widening project between Gutkeshwar Temple and Sadar Bazar Road in Indore, triggering protests from affected residents who alleged they were left without compensation or rehabilitation support.

The Indore Municipal Corporation carried out the demolition drive with heavy machinery, including nine Poklane machines and five JCBs, while over 100 personnel were deployed at the site.

Municipal officials said the action was part of an ongoing infrastructure project aimed at widening the road corridor. However, residents claimed that several of the structures being demolished had been occupied by families for generations.

Many affected families alleged that despite receiving notices, they were not provided alternative housing, compensation, plots, or rehabilitation packages before the demolition.

Several residents, including elderly citizens and widows, said they now face uncertainty over shelter and livelihood. Some claimed that portions of their homes beyond the marked demolition limits were removed during the drive.

Locals maintained that they were not opposed to the road-widening project but demanded proper rehabilitation measures before being displaced. They urged authorities to provide permanent housing solutions for affected families.

The demolition operation drew political attention, with local Congress leaders visiting the site and expressing support for residents. Opposition leaders criticised the civic body's approach and demanded relief for displaced families.

Municipal authorities have not yet issued a detailed statement on compensation or rehabilitation measures related to the project.
