Oracle begins fresh round of layoffs, India product engineering teams worst hit

Oracle has begun a fresh round of layoffs, with employees in India receiving termination notices, less than a week after the company raised its expected restructuring costs by about USD 700 million. The cuts began in the United States on September 14 and continued in India.
Product engineering teams have borne the brunt of the India cuts, while support and consulting functions have seen relatively fewer job losses, Moneycontrol reported, citing sources. The exact number of employees affected in India could not be independently confirmed.
Employees received an early morning email from "Oracle Leadership" saying their roles had been eliminated as part of a "broader organizational change". The notice said the day of the email was their last working day, and that access to company computers, email, voicemail and files would be deactivated. The Indian Express reported that staff were asked to provide a personal email address to receive separation documents.
Severance is four weeks of base salary plus one additional week for every year worked, according to documents cited by Business Insider and reported by The Indian Express. Notices went out around 6 am, the San Francisco Chronicle reported, with some employees losing access to company systems before the email arrived.
The full scale of the round is not yet known. Moneycontrol reported that internal estimates put the global figure at 7,000 to 10,000, and that Oracle's global headcount had fallen by at least 5,000 to 6,000 over the weekend. Business Today put the number affected so far at more than 3,000 globally.
Some senior employees in Oracle Financial Services Software (OFSS) global teams are among those affected, Moneycontrol reported, though the company's India arm has not seen layoffs in this round. Employees have been discussing the cuts on internal Slack channels, and many have posted about their exits on LinkedIn.
Oracle has not commented on the fresh round. A spokesperson did not respond to requests for comment from Business Insider and Moneycontrol.
The layoffs follow a reduction of about 21,000 employees, or 13 per cent, in the financial year ended May 31, which brought Oracle's workforce to about 141,000. Employee trackers put the cumulative global tally closer to 30,000.
Business Today also reported that Oracle has revoked campus placement offers made to fresh graduates in India, affecting students who had secured jobs with the company.
On September 11, Oracle said it would raise expected restructuring costs for fiscal 2026 by about USD 700 million to roughly USD 2.8 billion, covering severance, contract terminations and other exit costs, Reuters reported.
The company is at the same time spending heavily on data centres for artificial intelligence. Oracle reported USD 28.5 billion in capital expenditure in the first quarter, against USD 8.5 billion a year earlier, and has kept its fiscal 2027 capital expenditure forecast at USD 90 billion to USD 95 billion. It plans to raise about USD 40 billion through debt and equity financing this financial year.
