NIMAS scales 20 unclimbed Ladakh peaks in 23 days

In a landmark achievement for Indian mountaineering, the National Institute of Mountaineering and Adventure Sports (NIMAS), based in Dirang, Arunachal Pradesh, has scripted history by successfully summiting 20 unclimbed peaks above 6,000 metres in Ladakh. The elite expedition team accomplished the extraordinary feat of recording 20 first-ever summits in just 23 days.

Under the leadership of Colonel Ranveer Singh Jamwal, Director, NIMAS, the institute has secured its third consecutive world record in three years. The expedition underscores the institution’s capability to execute technically demanding assignments across some of the most remote and hazardous Himalayan terrains.

Operating under the Ministry of Defence, NIMAS remains India’s premier institution offering comprehensive training across land, air, and water-based adventure disciplines. From white-water rafting, scuba diving, and mountain biking to paragliding and mountaineering, the institution has emerged as a crucial hub for youth development and adventure sports in the North-East.

Officials noted that the success aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call for the nation’s youth to engage in fitness, adventure, and exploration as drivers of personal growth and national progress. Embracing the ethos of the Fit India movement, the expedition aimed to inspire young citizens to step beyond virtual environments and build resilience, teamwork, and physical endurance.

The historic campaign also highlights the growing potential of North-Eastern institutions to deliver world-class feats. By fostering discipline and adventure sports leadership, NIMAS continues to cement Arunachal Pradesh and the wider region as a major force in national excellence and exploration.
