NHPC seeks shareholders nod to raise borrowing limit to Rs 70,000 crore

State-owned hydropower giant NHPC will seek shareholders’ approval to raise its borrowing limit from Rs 60,000 crore to Rs 70,000 crore at the annual general meeting scheduled on August 28, 2026.
On the need for the proposed increase in borrowing limit, the company explained in the notice for the AGM that, keeping in view fund requirements due to the very robust capex plan of the company, the limit of Rs 60,000 crore is required to be increased. The tentative debt requirement for ongoing and new projects up to about the next five years as per capex requirements will be approximately Rs 67,500 crore, which will exceed the approved borrowing limit of Rs 60,000 crore in about the next three years, it stated. The approval of the shareholders is being sought by way of special resolution, for authorising the Board of Directors to borrow money from time to time, exceeding the paid-up share capital, its free reserves and securities premium, provided that total amount so borrowed (apart from the temporary loans obtained from the bankers of the company in the ordinary course of business) shall not at any time exceed Rs 70,000 crore.
