Nepal flash flood death toll rises to 987, nearly 4,000 people still missing

The death toll from the devastating flash floods in Nepal has risen to 987, with security forces recovering more bodies from several parts of the country, officials said on Tuesday.

Authorities said 3,916 people, including 583 foreigners, remain unaccounted for as search and rescue operations continue in the flood-affected areas.

According to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA), the highest number of bodies has been recovered from Chitwan, where 321 people have been confirmed dead.

Nawalparasi East has reported 216 deaths, followed by Nawalparasi West with 170 and Nuwakot with 95.

Another 65 bodies were recovered from Gorkha, 55 from Dhading, 38 from Tanahun and 27 from Rasuwa, the NDRRMA said.

The flash floods have affected eight districts, with security personnel, including members of the Nepal Army, continuing to search for people reported missing.

Officials said 279 people were injured in the disaster. Of them, 168 have been discharged from hospitals after receiving treatment.

Search teams are continuing operations in areas affected by the floods as authorities work to locate those still unaccounted for and recover more bodies.

The disaster has caused widespread damage in several parts of Nepal, with rescue agencies and local authorities continuing relief and recovery efforts in the affected districts.
