Bank employee killed, 5 injured as speeding taxi rams autorickshaw in Navi Mumbai

A 36-year-old woman working at a bank was killed and five others injured after a speeding taxi rammed into an autorickshaw in Maharashtra's Navi Mumbai township, police said on Monday.

The accident took place on Sunday afternoon on Palm Beach Road in the Nerul area.

The taxi, which was allegedly speeding, collided with the autorickshaw travelling ahead. Neha Rajivkumar Gupta, a passenger in the autorickshaw and an employee of a nationalised bank, sustained serious injuries and later died during treatment, a police official said. She was a resident of the NRI Complex in Seawoods.

Five people travelling in the taxi were also injured and taken to a hospital, police said.

The taxi driver, Mobin Asif Shaikh, 35, a resident of Mankhurd in Mumbai, was subsequently arrested.

Police said Shaikh was booked under sections 106(1) (causing death by negligence), 125(b) (act endangering life or personal safety of others causing grievous hurt) and 281 (rash driving on a public way) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, along with relevant provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act.  (with inputs from PTI)
