Navi Mumbai commences international freighter operations

Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) on Tuesday announced the commencement of its dedicated international freighter operation with the inaugural freighter flight to Sharjah operated by IndiGo CarGo on August 2. The start of the freighter services reaffirms the airport’s emergence as a new cargo gateway for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region and Western India, NMIA said. The flight carried 20 tonnes of cargo comprising general cargo and perishable goods.

The shipment also included bonded transfer cargo received from Mumbai and Ahmedabad, which was transported to NMIA through bonded trucking arrangements, it said.

This operation marks an important step in strengthening NMIA’s integrated cargo ecosystem, which has been designed to support domestic, international, express and transit cargo movements. With specialised capabilities for handling perishables, pharmaceuticals, valuables, dangerous goods and other cargo segments, the airport is well positioned to deliver efficient logistics solutions for airlines, freight forwarders, exporters and importers, the private airport operator said.

“The launch of the first international freighter operation from NMIA is a proud moment and a significant milestone in our cargo growth journey. The successful handling of approximately 20 tonnes of cargo, including bonded transfer shipments from Mumbai and Ahmedabad, demonstrates NMIA’s capability to support reliable, compliant and seamless cargo movement. This marks an important step in establishing NMIA as a preferred air cargo hub for the region,” an NMIA spokesperson said.
