Mumbai Railway Land Demolition Drive Sparks Protests and Unrest

One of Mumbai’s largest anti-encroachment drives turned tense after a large-scale demolition operation in Bandra’s Garib Nagar area triggered protests and clashes.

The Western Railway launched the operation to reclaim railway land estimated to be worth nearly ₹600 crore, targeting around 500 illegal hutments built on railway property near Bandra railway station. The action was carried out following directions from the Bombay High Court.

According to officials, the land clearance is linked to railway infrastructure expansion plans, including the proposed Integrated Bandra Railway Complex and additional railway line development projects. Authorities stated that the structures posed concerns due to their proximity to railway tracks, overhead electric lines, and critical infrastructure.

However, the operation led to significant unrest among residents, many of whom alleged inadequate notice and raised concerns about rehabilitation and displacement.

Tensions reportedly increased as the demolition coincided with preparations for Eid, leading to fears and anger among affected families. Several displaced residents, including children and elderly people, were left without immediate shelter arrangements.

The situation escalated further with incidents of stone-pelting and clashes between protesters and police personnel.

Several police officers were reportedly injured and multiple people were detained as security forces moved in to control the situation.

The demolition drive later resumed under heightened security arrangements.
