MP to make TET sole exam for teacher recruitment

The Madhya Pradesh Government is preparing to introduce a significant change in its teacher recruitment process by doing away with the teacher selection examination and making the Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) the sole qualifying examination for appointments in Government schools.

The School Education Department has finalised a proposal in this regard and is expected to issue a formal notification after obtaining the State Government’s approval. If implemented, the move would mark one of the most substantial reforms in teacher recruitment in the State in recent years.

Under the existing system, aspiring teachers are required to first qualify the Teacher Eligibility Test and subsequently appear for a separate teacher selection examination before becoming eligible for appointment. The proposed framework seeks to eliminate this second stage, allowing recruitment to be conducted directly from among candidates who have cleared the eligibility examination.

Officials believe the change will streamline the recruitment process, reduce procedural delays and enable the Government to fill thousands of vacant teaching posts more quickly. The proposal is also aimed at easing the financial and logistical burden on candidates, who currently have to prepare for and appear in multiple examinations before securing employment.

According to the proposal, recruitment to Government schools will continue to be carried out through a merit-based process, with candidates selected from the pool of those who have qualified the eligibility examination. The department is also considering provisions to ensure that candidates who have already cleared earlier eligibility examinations are not disadvantaged under the new system.

The reform comes against the backdrop of persistent teacher shortages in Government schools and repeated demands from aspirants to simplify the recruitment mechanism. Officials expect that reducing the number of examinations will shorten the recruitment cycle and improve the availability of qualified teachers in classrooms.

The proposal also seeks to bring greater clarity to the distinction between an eligibility examination, which certifies a candidate’s minimum qualification to teach, and the recruitment process, which determines appointments based on merit and notified vacancies.

The proposed changes are expected to apply only to recruitment in Government schools. For private schools, qualifying the Teacher Eligibility Test will continue to remain a mandatory requirement for appointment, in accordance with existing norms.

The proposal has not yet received final approval. The revised recruitment framework will come into effect only after the State Government formally clears the proposal and issues the necessary notification.
