MCD launches drive to identify and seal illegal structures in South Delhi after Saket building collapse

After the deadly building collapse near Saket, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has launched a major drive to identify and seal illegal structures across South Delhi.
The action comes after a multi-storey commercial building in the Saidulajab area near Saket Metro Station collapsed, killing six people and injuring several others. Investigations have indicated that unauthorized construction and structural violations may have contributed to the tragedy.
According to reports, MCD teams have started surveying vulnerable buildings and unauthorized constructions in areas including Mehrauli, Saket, Chhattarpur and nearby localities. Structures found violating approved building plans or safety norms could face sealing, demolition or legal action.
Officials are also reviewing buildings where additional floors were allegedly constructed without permission. The collapse site itself reportedly had illegal expansion work underway on upper floors before the structure gave way.
Following the incident, two MCD engineers were suspended for alleged negligence, while Delhi Police registered an FIR against the building owner and contractors under charges including culpable homicide. A magisterial inquiry has also been ordered to determine accountability and examine possible lapses in enforcement.
Authorities say the fresh crackdown aims to prevent similar incidents and improve compliance with building safety regulations in densely populated areas of South Delhi. Civic officials have been directed to identify unsafe and unauthorized constructions and take immediate corrective action.
The Saket collapse has once again raised concerns over illegal construction activities in Delhi and the effectiveness of monitoring mechanisms meant to prevent dangerous structural violations.
