Major train collision averted near Bhubaneswar after 2 trains end up on same track

A major railway accident was narrowly averted near Bhubaneswar on Thursday after two trains were found on the same track near the Jharpada bridge area, prompting an immediate response from railway authorities.
According to preliminary information, one train was moving towards Mancheswar from Bhubaneswar, while another train was approaching from the opposite direction. The potential danger was detected in time, allowing railway staff to halt both trains and prevent a collision.
The incident triggered panic among passengers and local residents in the busy rail corridor. However, officials confirmed that no injuries, casualties, or damage were reported.
Railway authorities said the near-miss occurred during a shunting operation involving an empty rake being moved for scheduled maintenance activities. During the low-speed movement, the rake came into close proximity with another stationary empty rake on the same track.
In an official statement, railway officials clarified that both rakes were empty at the time of the incident and that the situation was brought under control promptly.
Technical teams and railway personnel were immediately deployed to the site to secure the rolling stock and assess the circumstances surrounding the incident. Officials also confirmed that train operations on the main line and passenger services remained unaffected.
A high-level inquiry has been ordered to determine how both trains ended up on the same track. The investigation will focus on possible signalling failures, communication gaps, and operational lapses that may have contributed to the incident.
The near-collision has once again raised concerns about railway safety and operational monitoring, particularly in busy rail sections where shunting and maintenance activities are routinely carried out.
Authorities said accountability will be fixed after the completion of the investigation and appropriate corrective measures will be implemented to prevent similar incidents in the future.
