LG pushes Dwarka as investment hub

Delhi Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu on Friday chaired an industry interaction on positioning Dwarka as a major economic and commercial hub.
On the occasion, the LG told industry representatives that the sub-city’s proximity to the international airport, seamless connectivity, and maturing urban ecosystem make it investment-ready across sectors while insisting that its industrial growth must remain clean, non-polluting, and focused on generating large-scale employment for the local workforce.
The session was attended by industry representatives from the real estate and infrastructure, hospitality, and healthcare sectors, along with the DDA Vice Chairman, senior Delhi government officials, and the Managing Director of ITPO.
The LG said Dwarka, as one of Asia’s largest planned sub-cities, is uniquely positioned to become a premier investment destination with opportunities in commerce, hospitality, healthcare, education, and technology. He emphasised urban redevelopment and infrastructure upgradation as essential to Delhi’s long-term economic growth.
On industrial character, he was specific: Dwarka’s growth should steer clear of industries that could compromise its environmental quality. The focus should be on a labour-centric industrial base that translates economic growth into direct livelihood gains for the people of Delhi.
The LG observed that planning and development norms, including floor area ratio, need to be reviewed and rationalised in line with emerging urban requirements. He said sector-specific policy measures are needed to enhance Delhi’s competitiveness as an investment destination.
Industry representatives suggested a more investor-friendly ecosystem through improved infrastructure, research and innovation facilities, a streamlined single-window clearance mechanism, and simplified approval processes.
They also called for promoting hospitality, tourism, and healthcare infrastructure, incentivising knowledge-based industries, IT, ITES, and global capability centres, strengthening research and development, and leveraging MICE infrastructure at Yashobhoomi and Bharat Mandapam, supported by adequate hotel capacity.
The DDA vice chairman said the authority has made land available to support future investments and is working with stakeholder agencies to streamline approvals. He referred to the recently approved Transit-Oriented Development Policy, formulated under the LG’s guidance, which brings all concerned agencies together for single-point, time-bound approvals for eligible projects.
The additional chief secretary for industries said major ease-of-doing-business reforms are underway, including a new industrial policy, integration of approval processes across departments, and promotion of research and innovation through financial support mechanisms.
