Ladakh sees 43% jump in tourist arrivals in 2026, May records 121% growth

Ladakh has recorded a significant surge in tourist arrivals in 2026, with visitor numbers rising by more than 43 per cent during the first five months of the year, according to Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena.

Sharing the figures on social media, Saxena said the Union Territory welcomed 1,17,546 tourists between January and May 2026, compared to 81,827 visitors during the same period last year, marking a year-on-year growth of 43.65 per cent.

May emerged as a standout month for tourism in the region, registering a remarkable 121.20 per cent increase in arrivals. Official data showed that 72,834 tourists visited Ladakh in May 2026, more than double the 32,927 arrivals recorded in May 2025.

The Lieutenant Governor attributed the growth to sustained efforts to improve infrastructure, strengthen connectivity and promote Ladakh as a premier tourism destination. He also highlighted the impact of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's call to encourage domestic tourism across the country.

Popular tourist attractions such as Pangong Lake, Nubra Valley and Khardung La have witnessed a sharp rise in visitor footfall. Officials said hotels, homestays and tour operators across the region are experiencing high occupancy levels as tourism activity gathers momentum.

The strong recovery comes after temporary disruptions caused by security concerns and travel advisories following the Pahalgam terror attack and Operation Sindoor. With normalcy restored, tourism stakeholders have reported renewed business activity and growing visitor confidence.

Known for its breathtaking landscapes, monasteries and adventure tourism opportunities, Ladakh has evolved into one of India's most sought-after travel destinations. Authorities said the tourism boom continues to play a crucial role in boosting the local economy, generating employment and supporting businesses dependent on the hospitality sector.

Inviting more visitors to the region, Saxena said Ladakh offers a unique blend of nature, adventure, spirituality, culture and tranquillity, making it one of India's most distinctive travel experiences.
