Water war between AP And TG : KRMB defers decision on drinking water sharing

The three member – committee of Krishna River Management Board (KRMB) has once again deffered a decision on Krishna water sharing between Andhra Pradesh and Telangana for drinking purposes. Officials said that since the two states are not accepting each other for the proposed sharing. 

In the previous meeting on August 24, the committee deferred its decision due to the both states did not come into consensus on water sharing. The committee met again on Friday in Hyderabad for which the Irrigation officials from the both states attended. 

According to the officials, during the meeting, the Telangana government has proposed sharing of Krishna water on a 50:50 percent basis, for which the Andhra Pradesh government has objected. In contrast, the Andhra Pradesh government has proposed 66 percent of water for Andhra Pradesh and 34 percent for Telangana. Officials of Telangana government has objected to the proposal submitted by Andhra Pradesh. 

Sources said that the officials of both states have made allegations against each other on utilization of krishna water. While, Andhra Pradesh alleged that Telangana government is utilizing water from Nagarjuna Sagar project for power generation, Telangana government alleged that Andhra Pradesh is illeagally withdrawing water from Pothireddypady project. Andhra Pradesh government urged the KRMB to direct Telangana government to stop power generation immediately. 

Telangana Irrigation Officials, speaking to reporters, said that they have demanded allocation of 200 TMC of water to Telangana, due to the prevailing El – Nino conditions. They also made it clear that they have objected to 66: 34 percent sharing proposed by Andhra Pradesh. For the last three year Andhra Pradesh government is repeatedly proposing the same percentage of sharing despite the Telangana government objecting, they added.
