Kohli: If I've to prove my worth and value, that place is not for me

Indian cricket star Virat Kohli has said he will continue playing as long as he feels valued in the team environment, adding that he would step away if he is made to constantly prove his worth.
Speaking on a podcast with his IPL franchise Royal Challengers Bengaluru, the 37-year-old batter said he is fully committed to the game and remains focused on maintaining high standards in his preparation and performance.
Kohli said he continues to train and approach cricket with the same intensity every day, emphasising that his motivation comes from his love for the sport rather than external expectations.
However, he made it clear that mutual trust between a player and the team environment is essential. “If I can add value to the environment that I am part of, and the environment feels that I can add value, I will be seen,” he said.
He added that if he is made to feel he constantly needs to prove his worth, then “that place is not meant to be for me.”
Kohli, who now plays only ODI cricket after retiring from T20 Internationals in 2024 and Test cricket in 2025, also spoke about maintaining discipline in fitness and preparation even in a reduced international schedule.
He said he continues to remain ready for any opportunity, highlighting that he prepares as if he will field and bat for the full duration of a match.
The former India captain also reflected on his return to domestic cricket during the 2025–26 Vijay Hazare Trophy, where he scored a century and reached a major List A milestone, saying he played purely out of love for the game.
Kohli added that clarity and consistency from the team management are important for any player’s confidence, stressing that fluctuating opinions after selection can affect performance and stability.
He further stated that he prefers honesty in communication, saying it is better to be clear upfront rather than change expectations repeatedly based on results.
Despite uncertainty over future ODI plans, Kohli said he remains committed to contributing whenever required and will continue as long as he is valued in the setup.
