Karnataka Student Suicide: 3 Cops Suspended After Family Alleges Harassment

A college student in Karnataka allegedly died by suicide, with his family accusing police of harassment following his detention during an anti-drug drive. Three policemen have been suspended as authorities launched an investigation into the incident.
The student, Aditya Myageri, a BSc student in Dharwad, was among 18 students detained by Vidyagiri police on April 25. According to officials, he was one of the 10 students who tested negative for ganja consumption and was subsequently released.
Aditya, a resident of Belur village in Bagalkot district, had been staying in a rented accommodation in Dharwad. His family alleged that despite testing negative, he was harassed by police personnel, who allegedly demanded ₹2,000 and threatened legal action if he failed to comply.
The family claimed that Aditya had called his mother seeking money, which she was unable to arrange immediately. On Monday night, he was found dead by suicide at his residence, allegedly hanging from a ceiling fan.
Police have registered an unnatural death case at Vidyagiri police station. N Shashi Kumar confirmed that three policemen have been suspended in connection with the allegations, and further investigation is ongoing.
The incident has raised serious concerns over alleged police excesses and the treatment of students during enforcement drives.
