Karnataka man arrested for allegedly killing wife over dowry demands and weight-related taunts

A 29-year-old woman was allegedly strangled to death by her husband in Karnataka's Dharwad district, with police claiming the murder followed repeated dowry demands and verbal abuse over her weight and inability to conceive. The incident took place in Hanasi village of Navalgund taluk, where the victim, Priyanka Kamalakar, was found dead after an alleged domestic dispute.

According to police, Priyanka had married Basavaraj Waddar in 2024. Her family alleged that after the marriage, Basavaraj and his relatives repeatedly harassed her for additional cash and gold.

They also claimed she was regularly humiliated over her weight and taunted for not bearing a child, leading to frequent arguments between the couple. Investigators allege that during one such altercation, Basavaraj strangled his wife to death.

Following a complaint by the victim's family, the Navalgund Police arrested Basavaraj along with three of his relatives. A case has been registered, and the investigation is underway to determine the full circumstances surrounding the alleged dowry-related murder.
