Kalamassery gangrape case: Two more arrested, total accused held rises to four

Two more persons, including a woman, have been arrested in connection with the alleged gangrape of a woman at Kalamassery here, taking the total number of accused held in the case to four, police said on Wednesday.

The two accused, Saranya alias Ammu, a native of Alappuzha, and Sanju, from Thrissur, were apprehended in Wayanad on Tuesday night, where they had allegedly been hiding, a senior police officer said.

"They were nabbed from Wayanad where they were hiding and are being brought here. Their arrests will be recorded after they are brought here and questioned," he said.

Kochi City Police Commissioner S Kaliraj Mahesh Kumar later said the survivor's statements indicated that Saranya allegedly played a key role in the assault.

The alleged incident took place on October 2 and four people were allegedly involved, police had said earlier.

Police have already arrested Sreeraj and Jith Martin in connection with the case. They were subsequently remanded in judicial custody.

According to police, the accused allegedly recorded visuals of the survivor during the incident.

The survivor later informed her partner about the alleged assault and approached the police, following which an investigation was launched to establish the sequence of events and identify the role of each accused.

The survivor's partner had on Tuesday spoken to reporters in Kochi about the alleged assault, saying she returned home severely injured after leaving in connection with a promised job.

He alleged that four people, including a woman, assaulted her and that more people entered the room later.

According to him, the survivor was able to stop the assault only after she broke a beer bottle and threatened to kill herself if the attack continued.

Police are continuing their investigation into the case and are examining the circumstances surrounding the alleged assault and the involvement of all those accused.
