Indian Navy to commission indigenous stealth frigate INS Mahendragiri on July 11

The Indian Navy is set to commission INS Mahendragiri, the country's latest indigenous stealth guided-missile frigate, on July 11 at the Naval Dockyard in Visakhapatnam. The warship marks the successful completion of the Navy's ambitious Project 17A programme, aimed at strengthening India's maritime capabilities with next-generation stealth warships.
INS Mahendragiri is the seventh and final frigate under Project 17A and has been designed by the Indian Navy's Warship Design Bureau. Built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL), the warship incorporates advanced stealth features, modern weapons, sophisticated sensors and automated platform management systems, making it capable of undertaking a wide range of maritime operations.
The frigate has been developed with a high degree of indigenous content, reflecting India's growing self-reliance in defence manufacturing under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative. It is equipped for multi-dimensional warfare, enabling operations against threats in the air, on the surface and underwater.
Project 17A comprises seven Nilgiri-class stealth frigates being built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited and Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE). The induction of INS Mahendragiri completes the programme, under which six advanced frigates have already joined or are in the process of joining the Navy's fleet.
The commissioning comes as the Indian Navy continues to modernise its fleet amid evolving security challenges in the Indian Ocean Region. The addition of INS Mahendragiri is expected to significantly enhance India's maritime surveillance, anti-submarine warfare, anti-air defence and long-range strike capabilities.
With the induction of another indigenous frontline warship, the Navy reinforces its focus on advanced technology, operational readiness and domestic defence manufacturing, further boosting India's strategic maritime strength.
