Indian national killed, 13 injured in attack on Kuwait International Airport; MEA assures assistance

A day after an Indian national was killed and 13 others injured in an attack on Kuwait International Airport, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Thursday said that the Indian mission in Kuwait is in constant touch with the affected families and local authorities. The mortal remains of the deceased are expected to arrive in India on June 5.

Addressing an inter-ministerial briefing on the evolving situation in West Asia, Aseem R Mahajan, Additional Secretary (Gulf) in the MEA, expressed condolences to the family of the victim and outlined the Government’s response.

“Yesterday, in an attack on Kuwait International Airport, an Indian national unfortunately lost his life. We express our deepest condolences to the family of the deceased,” Mahajan said.

He added that the Indian Embassy in Kuwait is coordinating closely with local authorities and providing all necessary support to the family. “His mortal remains are expected to arrive in India tomorrow. Thirteen Indian nationals have also been injured in the attack and are currently undergoing treatment at various hospitals in Kuwait. Our mission is extending all possible assistance to the injured and remains in close contact with local authorities,” he said.

The attack occurred on Wednesday amid heightened regional tensions between the United States and Iran, raising concerns over the security situation in the Gulf region. This marks the second fatality involving an Indian national in Kuwait in recent months. Earlier, an Indian citizen was killed in Iranian strikes on a power and water desalination plant in Kuwait on March 30.

Mahajan said the MEA is closely monitoring developments across the Gulf and the wider West Asia region. Indian diplomatic missions are actively engaging with the Indian community and maintaining regular contact with community associations, professional groups, organisations, and Indian companies to address concerns and provide timely assistance.

Providing an update on the regional travel situation, Mahajan noted that Iran’s airspace remains partially open. He reiterated the Government’s advisory urging Indian nationals to avoid travel to Iran and encouraged those currently in the country to leave with assistance from the Indian Embassy.

“So far, our embassy in Tehran has facilitated the movement of 2,557 Indian nationals out of Iran through land border routes,” he said.

He also informed that Israel’s airspace has reopened, with limited flight operations resuming to destinations within the region. These services can be used by Indian nationals seeking onward travel to India. The MEA continues to monitor the situation closely and remains committed to ensuring the safety and welfare of Indian citizens in the region.
