INDIA Bloc meeting begins in Delhi amid internal differences; leaders stress unity and democratic values

A key meeting of the opposition INDIA bloc began in New Delhi on June 8, with top leaders gathering to discuss strategy, unity, and challenges ahead of upcoming political battles against the BJP-led central government.

The meeting, held at the Constitution Club, comes amid visible differences within the alliance. Leaders present stressed the need to safeguard democratic values and focus on public welfare issues, even as some constituents skipped the meeting or raised concerns about internal coordination.

Prominent leaders in attendance included Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, and Mallikarjun Kharge, along with Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, TMC chief Mamata Banerjee, and Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah.

Speaking to reporters, Akhilesh Yadav said the agenda would be decided collectively during the meeting and emphasised the need to protect democratic values and move towards national unity. Other leaders also highlighted that discussions would focus on issues affecting livelihoods and national governance.

CPI general secretary D. Raja noted that the meeting was being held after a significant gap and at a time when several issues required coordination among alliance partners. He said opposition parties must work with mutual trust while prioritising concerns of ordinary citizens.

However, the alliance continues to face internal strains. Reports indicate differences between constituent parties over campaign statements and state-level political tensions. Some parties, including the DMK, skipped the meeting, citing grievances, while the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has already exited the alliance.
