Income Tax Dept Releases ITR 1 and ITR 4 Utilities for AY 2026 27

The Income Tax Department has released the Excel utilities for ITR-1 and ITR-4 forms for Financial Year 2025-26 and Assessment Year 2026-27, allowing eligible taxpayers to begin filing their income tax returns through the official e-filing portal.
The department also confirmed that online filing for both forms has now been activated. Taxpayers can access the utilities and submit their returns through the official portal at Income Tax e Filing Portal.
In a post shared on X, the department said the Excel utility and online filing facility for ITR-1 and ITR-4 are now available for eligible users.
Who Can File ITR-1 Sahaj?
ITR-1, also known as Sahaj, is meant for resident individuals with total income up to Rs 50 lakh from the following sources:
- Salary or pension
- One house property
- Other sources such as interest income
- Agricultural income up to Rs 5,000
The form is generally used by salaried individuals and pensioners with simple income structures.
Who Can File ITR-4?
ITR-4 is applicable for individuals, Hindu Undivided Families (HUFs) and firms with income up to Rs 50 lakh under the presumptive taxation scheme.
It is commonly used by small business owners, freelancers and professionals opting for presumptive income taxation under sections 44AD, 44ADA and 44AE of the Income Tax Act.
Tax experts have advised taxpayers to carefully verify Form 26AS, Annual Information Statement (AIS) and Taxpayer Information Summary (TIS) before filing returns to avoid discrepancies.
The release of the utilities marks the beginning of the income tax return filing season for Assessment Year 2026-27.
