Gold worth 2.16 kg seized after passenger triggers metal detector at Delhi airport

Two passengers arriving from Dubai were intercepted at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport after customs officials recovered 2.16 kilograms of gold bars from them, officials said on Saturday.

According to a Customs statement, Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) officers discreetly followed the male and female passengers from the flight gate based on specific intelligence and profiling.

The officers noticed the woman speaking to the man near a washroom close to the baggage belts. Both were subsequently intercepted while attempting to exit through the Customs Green Channel.

While the woman’s baggage and screening through the Door Frame Metal Detector (DFMD) did not reveal anything suspicious, the male passenger triggered a strong alert during the screening.

A subsequent check led to the recovery of 11 gold bars weighing a total of 2,168 grams. The seized gold included ten 10-tola bars and one bar weighing one kilogram.

The passengers were apprehended and the gold was seized under the provisions of the Customs Act, 1962. Further investigation into the source and intended destination of the gold is underway.
